LinkedIn Headshot Feedback

Recruiters and clients judge your LinkedIn photo before they read a word of your profile. Photo Rater shows your headshot to real people who don't know you and tells you how it scores and whether it comes across as trustworthy, confident and friendly, or as standoffish and closed.

Feedback on how professional you look

Raters score each headshot out of 5 and tag the impression it gives. For a professional photo the words that matter are trustworthy, confident, intelligent, friendly and well-dressed; the ones to watch for are arrogant, standoffish and closed. Seeing those words across many raters is the feedback a photographer or colleague rarely gives you straight.

Compare before you pay for a shoot

Upload the headshots you already have, from a phone, a past shoot or an event, and see which one performs best. If none of them score well, the impression words tell you what to change before you book a photographer.

How it works

  1. Upload two or more headshots you are considering for LinkedIn or your CV.
  2. Rate other members' photos to earn tokens that keep yours being rated.
  3. Use the highest-scoring headshot and keep the impression words in mind for your next shoot.

Tips before you upload

  • Head and shoulders, with your face filling about half of the frame.
  • Dress the way you would for a meeting in your field, not a wedding.
  • Soft, even light from the front; avoid harsh overhead shadows.
  • A natural, slight smile reads as approachable without looking casual.
  • Plain, uncluttered background. Crop out other people and logos.

Questions

Who rates my headshot?

Other Photo Rater members from a range of ages and countries. You can set the gender and age range of the raters. Ratings are anonymous, so people have no reason to flatter you.

Does Photo Rater post anything to LinkedIn?

No. Photo Rater doesn't connect to LinkedIn. Your photos are only shown to members rating inside the app, and you can delete them at any time.

Is a phone headshot good enough for LinkedIn?

Often, yes, if the light is soft and the background is plain. Upload your phone headshot next to any professional one you have; if the phone photo scores as well, you don't need a shoot.
